Maverick is a male shepherd mix who entered the program on July 31, 2018. He came in with his brother Derek on 7-31-18. If you would be interested in adopting Maverick when he has completed his training, please contact his Rescue, Friends Fur Life Rescue at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Week 1. Maverick's handler states "Maverick has been with me for about 4 days and what I've seen so far is that he's a very good dog. I really think he is going to be easy to work with". His handler is looking forward to working with him because Maverick doesn't know much of anything. His behavior is good and he is not at all dog reactive, nor does he exhibit any resource guarding issues. He already has good manners and he will do pretty much what is asked of him with regards to basic cues/commands (sit, down, wait, stay). He likes to play with his brother Derek as well as the other dogs. His behavior is a little rough around the edges but nothing that is anything worrisome.
Week 2. Maverick's handler says he is a very good dog and he doesn't really have any issues at all. He's very good with people and other dogs, and he's ok without constantly being around his brother Derek (they were very bonded when they both came into the program). Maverick will do just about anything that is asked of him. He'll sit, lie down, wait, etc. His handler says "I just love him".
Week 3. Maverick is really starting to come out of his shell now. He's playing more with the other dogs which is really great for him. His behavior modification has been 100% good since day one, both with people as well as the other dogs. And his manners are great. As his handler says "it's always good to have a dog that has good manners; makes it so easy to work with". Maverick has never had a problem with interaction or behavior. He will be a good fit in any home! His handler says he really doesn't have any concerns about Maverick right now.
Week 4. Everything is good with Maverick and he's coming along fine. He has responded to everything that is asked of him. His behavior towards people and other dogs is "A-1, meaning 100% good" according to his handler. He's never even barked at any of the other dogs, even when playing. His manners have really improved and he now responds to the cues/commands sit, down, stay. He's a very chilled dog and extremely loving. And he's now started to play more. His handler says he doesn't have any concerns about Maverick. He really is a wonderful and quite handsome dog who will do well in any loving home.
Week 5. Maverick has been with his handler for 5 weeks now, and he says "Maverick is coming along wonderfully. He has not displayed any signs of being anxious without his brother Derek". Neither Maverick or Derek's handlers think they have to be adopted together. Each dog has made friends with the other dogs and while they still interact and play, they will ignore each other to play with the other dogs. Maverick's handler said he had seen the report that Maverick can get crazy weird with his toys.. His handler says he plays with all kinds of toys and has taken them from Maverick with no reaction or craziness. Maverick has wonderful manner and is doing very well on his cues/commands. His handler works with Maverick on everything that will make him a great house pet. He loves any person that will give him love. Maverick is a laid back kind of dog and once you meet him, you will immediately fall in love with him. He is ready for his furever home.
Week 6. No Journals this week. Prison was in lockdown.
Week 7. Maverick's training is coming along very well. His handler says at times it feels to him like Maverick has been with him for years. When his handler returns from being out of the cell, Maverick greets him with such enthusiasm and happiness. He loves his handler and his handler loves him. Maverick has zero behavior issues.. His manners are great. His rescue wants him and Derek to be adopted together as they were bonded, but both Maverick and Derek have bonded with other dogs and do not care if they are not together. Maverick will interact with any and all people. He loves people and wants to be around them as much as possible. He is a playful, loving dog that would do well in any home that will provide him plenty of exercise. He would do well with another dog as well.
Week 8. Maverick's handler said in his journal this week "I am not going to write much about Maverick because his training is going well. I say this because Maverick is ready to be adopted by a good family." Maverick is great with le. ash walking and knows his cues/commands. Any time is play time for Maverick. And he loves walking up to people for a hug. He would be a great fit for any person/familydog/children. He is a wonderful, loving, affectionate dog.
Week 9. Maverick is READY!!! He is great with people and other dogs, no resource guarding issues, no issues at all. He is a great dog and anyone who meets him will immediately fall in love with him. His manners are great, and his handler thinks he would do ok with children 10 or over (because of his size, he might accidently knock over a toddler or young child, NOT PURPOSELY!!) His personality is great and he has such a wonderful demeanor about him (just like his brother Derek). He is ready for his furever home!!!
Week 9. Nothing new to report. Maverick has excelled at all his training, is very people and dog friendly , and would do well in any LOVING home. He is a sweetheart of a dog.
